About This Game World-famous red-haired adventurer Adol Christin awakens in the unfamiliar land of Celceta, remembering nothing more than his own name. Bereft of his past, Adol explores the town he happened to wander into, searching for any clues at all to his identity. Joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time at his side these past weeks, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse – an act which ingratiates him to the local Romun Army general. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive.Eager to unravel the mystery of his past and the cause of his predicament, Adol sets off with his new-old thief friend, Duren, to chart the untamed wilderness that claimed his memories. Along the way he meets numerous other individuals who seem to have encountered him before, and must carefully determine who among them can be trusted.Developer Nihon Falcom originally revisited the land and characters of Japanese cult favorite Ys IV in 2012 with Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PlayStation Vita, and the game found its way to North America the following year. While it's far from the best game in the franchise, it's still enjoyable with engaging combat, a memorable soundtrack and a decent plot. A game for fans of the series but not the best place to start if you're not familiar with the series.. sigh*......It really hurts me to do this. I have loved Falcom since the mid 2000's when I first played Ys 6, and ever since then I've gone through as much of their library as possible. The Ys series has always had a special place in my heart and I never thought the series could fail me. Well......I stand corrected. To clarify, I am very much biased to Falcom in the 2000's AKA Trails in the Sky, Ys 6, Oath, Origin, etc. So for me, Ys 7 was already a step down, but at least the structure of the game was still fun. Here, I have to be honest, the idea of roaming around in the forest to peice Adol's memories together is so damn boring. It's so focused on being open-ended and not about having a fun path towards the next dungeon/town/whatever. This structure does not help the game at all since the battle system is in my opinion, crap. This game continues the party system from Ys 7 with skills, charge attacks, etc. I think this system pales in comparison to something like Oath or Origin. It no longer focuses on speed, movement, and magic use, and instead focuses on blocking, dodging, skills, and switching party members. The act of adding in more mechanics ironically makes the game more shallow as athe game now has to cope with all these different ways to fight instead of being laser focused with tertiary mechanics like magic to freshen up combat later on.The story and characters are also just uninteresting at best, and cringey at worst. It's not all that bad since the story in Ys games aren't entirely important, but at least the characters usually have some intrigue to them in the other games. Not a terrible point, but still worth mentioning. Now, it does say I don't recommend this game, but don't take that to mean this game is awful. Steam's binary system annoys me so in order for me to truly rate this compared to all the other Ys games then I have to downvote it. There are just too many other great Ys games for me not to. It's not awful, but its mediocrity is what kills it for me. This might be the first Falcom game I have no interest in finishing.. There are 2 things that all Falcom's YS series always have :1. Extremely good music, heck, I don't mind grinding back and forth for hours with all these well made soundtracks,2. Challenging as F*** boss battles ( especially for nightmare mode, the goons also hits hard ), it's like Dark Souls, but with japanese Anime graphicsFinally got all of the achievements. Waiting to clear the next YS game!. Full Review: http://wamsoon.com/index.php/2018/08/01/ys-memories-of-celceta-review/Basically I'm a newcomer to the Ys series but was still able to enjoy the story and the excellent combat so don't fear if you're new the series. This one is still worth playing. I played the game a lot on the Vita, sadly not being able to finish it before I gave up on that sinking ship of a platform (thanks Sony) I've only played a a few hours at this time of writing the review here but so far it's a pretty straight forward port- in ways. Let me explain, the game's got some good options to tweak graphics and even has an unlocked 120fps+ option which is nice to see. Lets you even customize the buttons you're getting prompted with, 360/PS3/etc which is fairly rare, so they certainly put in the effort to say the least in that regard. Where it's a straight forward port is kinda where I'm not sure I'm super happy with. The interface is gigantic on the screen, none of the scaling is altered and it's all pretty low-res since it was on the Vita- so things are both large for the small screen AND for touch controls (I haven't tested if touch works in this). So everything feels kinda huge on screen and the camera is very zoomed in- in some spots. Camera control is also very limited, you can zoom in and out like the vita version. There is no adjusting how the camera is angled. So if you don't like what you see in screenshots? Well you can't change that so, take that how you will. The game itself has aged and show's that it's not very refined, this shows a lot in the opening cutscene where walk cycles don't match up with how the characters move, animation in these scenes is very simplistic but get the job done. Okay, so there's a lot of negative there, is this worth your money? I would say yes. The presentation of the story is a bit wonky but it gets the job done. The combat is fast and starts off simple but opens up a lot more as you progress. Playing on Hard Mode is where you're gonna get more tension and fun out of the gameplay since it will force you to not rely on taking hits but instead flash guard/dodging (guarding/rolling at the last minute to slow-mo the enemies so you can omni-slash the crap out of them) and your characters unique skills. Each character has their own perks, sword, blunt, spear, daggers all play into the enemies weaknesses that'll stun/kill them faster- all of this is passive, just need to let the character do their thing or switch to them yourself. Characters all have their own skill that you activate that take from a shared MP pool you refill by attacking- letting your character wait a second will net you a larger sum of MP restored. So, combats fun, frantic and deep enough that it's not just a button masher. Characters with you are also active in combat, you can set them to passive if you fear they're going to get their face smashed but that's not TOO much a worry since the game gives some leeway, they can't seem to be taken down past 1HP, so if you get hit with a big AOE, your allies might survive with 1HP because of this, letting you run for safety. You also gather stuff for buffing weapons while you're out, your characters will thankfully both point out these gathering spots AND they will harvest it themselves. It's a fun game, the story isn't going to win any awards as it's fairly simple, predictable and straight forward. You a warrior with amnesia is trying to figure out how you lost your memory as you explore the place you lost it. A twist mid way through lets you know how it happened and there's more twists to be had. I called most of them and this was my first Ys game so it's not so much a surprise. Also, apparently this is a remake of a remake. It was a SNES game, then remade on PS2 then remade for Vita and now ported years later to PC. WEIRD, but all fairly different apparently. Either way, if this is your first Ys game you're not missing much from what I understand. It's the same character, but just a different adventure and I don't think there's any references to previous ones. I only saw ONE reference in Ys VIII to this game and that's about it. What you need to know: Adol is an adventurer who winds up in a sticky spot and has to adventure his way out. Sometimes his friend Dogi is there to do stuff. Also because I didn't have a good point to mention it, the music in this game is really, really good. Fits the fast paced adventure, all tunes are pretty great. I had to mention this because it's apparently a sin to not mention the great tracks in these games. I guess since the series has been fairly obscure for decades the fans gotta have something to cling to, which makes sense. It's been around since the ...Turbo Grafix 16/PC Engine and stayed obscure till this game/Ys VII so yeah I'd be annoyed too. ...Much like Phantasy Star's RPG series (1-4) being obscure despite being out the same week as Final Fantasy. Ahem, yes, rant over, game worth getting? Yes.. Falcom + Xseed + AmnYsic Adol. It's YS. Which is a good thing. Thank you, Xseed for giving us this game on time with GOOD PRICE! Unlike *OTHER* company. Anyway.Put some Power Metal Fantasy Music, and play on Nightmare Mode. Thank me later.. Didn't like the controls.Didn't like the storyDidn't like the UI.Didn't like the Sound.Likes:None.. The best non-jumping Ys game I've played. Great story graphics and sound too.. Good Game but also annoying!I'm getting too old for the RPG genre, since I'm more interested in the combat than story at this age, so I'm going to judge it pretty hard from my experience.1. I see how the YS series is progressing and I like how they improved on some mechanics from the previous versions but I'm also seeing some issue that calls for concern like the rock, paper, scissor action between the characters. I for one don't like the idea of having teamates to control or assist you on the adventure, too many things going on at once which distracts and forces me to spam without even taking notice anymore. I'm not sure if this make sense but the combat feels more quanity than quality. 2. I felt the dialogue should of been toned down bit and some of the cut scene's should of been removed after one sequence. How many times do you need to see a short sequence of activating a pillar or stepping on a floor switch? 3. Some of the quest felt dull and the Item crafting or synthesizing was a waste of time.I mostly hold "YS:Orgin" as one of the most regarded title in the series, but this game has its moments of fun especially when you get to play the boss trials in New GAME+.
